North vs South Cyprus for IVF: What Actually Differs

Cyprus is one island with two administrations, and that matters for IVF. The Republic of Cyprus in the south and North Cyprus (administered by the Turkish Cypriot authorities) have different laws on age limits, donors and how clinics are overseen. Articles online often mix the two, which is why patients read that "the age limit in Cyprus is 50" when that rule never applied to the north. This guide sets out, with sources, what actually differs, and what UK patients should check before choosing.

Short answer: In the Republic of Cyprus (the South), IVF is governed by Law 69(I)/2015, which since December 2023 sets an upper age limit of 53 for women and allows a donor-conceived child to learn the donor's identity at 18 if the donor agrees. In North Cyprus, clinics are licensed by the TRNC Ministry of Health, eligibility is assessed individually (women aged 45 and over need extra tests and ethics committee approval), and donation is anonymous. UK government advice notes that clinics in the north are not regulated in the same way as in the UK, so checking a clinic carefully matters more than which side of the island it is on.

The main differences at a glance

TopicNorth CyprusRepublic of Cyprus (South)
Main lawTRNC law on human cells, tissues and organs (2014), with a regulation on assisted reproduction centres; clinics licensed by the Ministry of HealthLaw 69(I)/2015 on medically assisted reproduction, last amended in 2023
Age of the womanNo single fixed limit; assessed individually. From 45, extra tests and ethics committee approval are required by law; in practice, women over 55 need a Ministry of Health committee's approvalUpper limit of 53 (raised from 50 in December 2023)
Donor anonymityAnonymous; the law prohibits sharing donors' identityAnonymous by default; since 2023 the donor's identity can be released to the child at 18 if the donor consents
Payment to donorsDonation must be voluntary and unpaidNo payment; expenses and lost earnings can be reimbursed
Number of embryosDecided by the clinic; ask about its policyBy law, one embryo for women under 39 in the first two cycles, then up to two
Who can be treatedAsk the clinic about its criteriaMarried couples, couples in a stable relationship, and single women

Laws change, as the South's 2023 amendment shows. Always check the current position with the clinic, and take legal advice for anything with long-term consequences.

Age limits: why you see different numbers

The figure most often quoted for "Cyprus", 50, was the original upper limit in the Republic of Cyprus. An amendment in December 2023 raised it to 53. Neither number describes North Cyprus, where there is no single age cut-off: the clinic's specialists assess each patient's results and health. TRNC law requires special tests and ethics committee approval for embryo transfer to women aged 45 and over. Our guide to IVF age limits in Cyprus explains how age is assessed and how it affects success.

Donors and anonymity

In the UK, people conceived with donated eggs or sperm can ask for the donor's identity at 18. In the Republic of Cyprus, donation is anonymous by default, but since 2023 the clinic can release the donor's identity to an adult donor-conceived person if the donor consents. In North Cyprus, the law requires donors' identities to be kept confidential, so a child cannot trace the donor through official records. If this matters to you, think it through before treatment; counselling helps. Read more about egg donation and donor anonymity in Cyprus.

Regulation and safety: what the UK government says

The UK fertility regulator, the HFEA, has no powers outside the UK, on either side of the island. The UK government's travel advice for Cyprus also notes that fertility treatment in the north carries risks because clinics are not regulated in the same way as in the UK, and that the British High Commission's ability to help in the north is limited.

We think patients should hear this clearly. It is the reason we only work with clinics licensed by the TRNC Ministry of Health, and why we encourage every patient to ask about laboratory standards, results by age group, embryo transfer policy and written pricing. You can read how we choose our partner clinics.

Getting there: practical travel points

  • Flying to the South and crossing: many UK patients fly to Larnaca or Paphos and travel north through one of the official crossing points with their passport. Our airport transfers can arrange this.
  • Flying to Ercan in the north: flights to Ercan usually connect through Turkey. Ercan is close to the clinics, so the drive after landing is short and there is no crossing point to pass. Our drivers meet patients at Ercan too.
  • Passport: it must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive, be valid for at least 3 months after you leave, and have a blank page. Make sure it is stamped on entry and exit.
  • Hire cars: cars hired in the Republic often have no insurance cover in the north.

Which side is right for you?

There is no single answer, but a few questions usually decide it:

  • Your age: above 53, the law in the South does not allow treatment; in the North, eligibility is assessed individually.
  • Donor identity: if you want your child to have the possibility of learning the donor's identity, the South's 2023 rules allow this with the donor's consent; the North does not.
  • The clinic itself: laboratory quality, results for patients like you and honest pricing matter more than the border.
  • Travel: where you fly into and whether you will cross between the two sides.

Frequently asked questions

Is IVF legal in North Cyprus?

Yes. IVF is carried out at clinics licensed by the TRNC Ministry of Health, under the TRNC law on human cells, tissues and organs and its regulation on assisted reproduction centres.

What is the IVF age limit in Cyprus?

In the Republic of Cyprus (the South), the legal upper limit for women is 53 since December 2023. In North Cyprus, there is no single fixed limit; women aged 45 and over need additional tests and ethics committee approval, and eligibility is decided individually.

Is egg donation anonymous in Cyprus?

In North Cyprus, yes. In the South, donation is anonymous by default, but since 2023 a donor-conceived adult can learn the donor's identity if the donor consents.

Can I cross between the north and the south?

Yes, through the official crossing points with your passport. Time spent in the north counts towards your permitted stay in Cyprus. If you plan to visit both sides during your trip, check the current UK government travel advice before you book.

How do I find out what is possible for me?

Send your recent results through our medical assessment form; a specialist at one of our partner clinics in North Cyprus will review them free of charge. If you need tests first, see which tests to do in the UK.
