Understanding IVF Age Limits in Cyprus: What You Need to Know

Age is the single biggest factor in IVF success, and it is also the first question most of our patients ask. This guide explains how age is assessed for IVF in North Cyprus, where Dream IVF Cyprus works with licensed partner clinics. The rules in the Republic of Cyprus (the South) are different, so we cover them separately below.

Short answer: There is no single fixed IVF age limit at our partner clinics in North Cyprus; each patient is assessed individually by the clinic's fertility specialists. In the Republic of Cyprus (the South), the law sets an upper age limit of 53 for women. Chances of success with your own eggs fall sharply in the early 40s, so many older patients use donor eggs.

Is there an age limit for IVF in North Cyprus?

Our partner clinics in North Cyprus do not apply one fixed upper age for every patient. Instead, each patient's eligibility is decided individually by the clinic's fertility specialists, based on their medical results and overall health.

In practice, the doctors look at:

• Ovarian reserve: AMH and FSH blood tests, and an ultrasound scan (antral follicle count).
• General health: medical history, and any condition that could make pregnancy riskier.
• Treatment plan: whether your own eggs are likely to work, or whether donor eggs would give a better chance.

Older patients may be asked for additional checks before treatment, such as a cardiology examination. For women aged 45 and over, the law in North Cyprus requires special tests and approval from an ethics committee before an embryo transfer, and in practice women over 55 need approval from a Ministry of Health committee.

How is the Republic of Cyprus (South) different?

In the Republic of Cyprus, IVF is governed by Law 69(I)/2015. Since an amendment in December 2023, it sets an upper age limit of 53 for women (the law refers to "the 53rd year" of age). Older articles that mention a "legal age limit of 50 in Cyprus" refer to the South's original limit, not to North Cyprus.

How does this compare with the UK?

On the NHS, women aged 39 or under may be eligible for up to 3 full IVF cycles, and women aged 40 to 42 for 1 cycle, if they meet the criteria. Local integrated care boards make the final decision and may add their own rules, so access varies by area. Private clinics in the UK set their own age policies.

How age affects IVF success

Fertility declines with age for both women and men, but the effect is much stronger in women. From the mid-30s, the number of eggs falls and a higher share of them have chromosomal abnormalities, which lowers the chance of each embryo leading to a birth.

The UK fertility regulator's latest figures show the size of the effect. In 2024, the birth rate per embryo transferred using the patient's own eggs was 38% for patients aged 18–34 and 8% for patients aged 43–44; the average across all ages was 30%. Results at any single clinic depend on its patients and its laboratory, so ask any clinic for its own figures by age group.

Options for patients of advanced maternal age

• Egg donation: Eggs from a younger donor are used. Because success depends largely on the age of the eggs, this is often the most effective option for women in their mid-40s and older.
• Embryo donation: Embryos donated by another couple are transferred.
• Tandem IVF: Eggs from the patient and from a donor are used in the same cycle, so you can try with your own eggs while having a backup.
• Surrogacy: Available at some of our partner clinics when carrying a pregnancy is not advisable. Surrogacy laws differ by country, so please take legal advice in your home country before you start.

Improving your chances
