Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Elevate your fertility potential with IUI

Understanding IUI

Fun fact: According to ESHRE (2022), intrauterine insemination can increase the chances of pregnancy by up to 30% compared to natural conception alone. IUI is a safe and effective option for individuals and couples struggling with infertility, offering a glimmer of hope on their journey to parenthood.

What Is IUI?

The IUI process typically involves the following steps:

  1. Ovulation induction: The woman’s ovaries are stimulated with medication to produce multiple eggs. This medication is typically given in the form of injections or oral tablets.

  2. Monitoring ovulation: The woman’s ovulation is monitored using ultrasound and blood tests to determine the best time to perform the IUI procedure.

  3. Washing the sperm: If using partner sperm, the sperm is washed to remove debris and other cells that may interfere with fertilization.

  4. Inserting the sperm: The sperm is inserted into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. This procedure is usually performed in the doctor’s office.

  5. Rest: The woman is typically advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure.

When Is IUI Recommended?

IUI is a good option for couples who:

  • Have mild male factor infertility: This means that the man has a low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology.

  • Have unexplained infertility: This means that no cause for the infertility has been found.

  • Have a history of cervical factor infertility: This means that the woman has problems with the opening of her cervix, which can make it difficult for sperm to reach the eggs.

  • Are undergoing fertility preservation: IUI can be used to preserve fertility for women who are undergoing medical treatments that could affect their fertility, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

IUI offers a number of benefits:

  1. Non-invasive and less invasive than IVF: Unlike IVF, which involves egg retrieval and fertilization in a laboratory setting, IUI is a simple procedure that does not require any surgery or anesthesia. This makes it a more comfortable and less invasive option for many couples.

  2. Easier to schedule and manage: IUI cycles can be planned and managed more easily than IVF cycles. The woman’s ovulation is monitored using ultrasound and blood tests to determine the optimal time for the IUI procedure. This allows for more flexibility in timing and planning the treatment.

  3. Better sperm delivery: IUI helps to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and the egg, improving the chances of fertilization. This is because the sperm are placed directly into the uterus, bypassing the cervix, which can sometimes hinder sperm motility.

  4. Suitable for mild male factor infertility: IUI can be an effective treatment for couples experiencing mild male factor infertility, such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm morphology. By increasing the number of sperm in the uterus, IUI can enhance fertilization chances.

  5. Lower risk of multiple pregnancies: IUI generally has a lower risk of multiple pregnancies compared to IVF. This is because the number of sperm placed into the uterus is more controlled, reducing the likelihood of multiple implantations.

  6. Cost-effectiveness: IUI is generally a more cost-effective option than IVF, especially for couples with milder forms of infertility. The medication, monitoring, and procedure itself are less expensive compared to the more complex IVF process.

  7. Preserves the cervical mucus: IUI allows for the use of the woman’s natural cervical mucus, which provides a protective layer for the sperm and helps them navigate the reproductive tract. This can be beneficial for couples with cervical factor infertility, where the cervical mucus may be less supportive of sperm movement.

IUI is a very quick and painless procedure. You may feel some mild cramping or discomfort during the procedure, but this is usually very short-lived.

There is no need to avoid sex after an IUI cycle. In fact, having sex after IUI may help to increase the chances of pregnancy.

The success rate of IUI varies depending on the woman’s age, her partner’s sperm count, and the cause of her infertility.

There are a few things that couples can do to increase their chances of success with IUI:

  • Be in good physical and emotional health
  • Have a healthy lifestyle
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Use a lubricant that is sperm-friendly during intercourse

The risks of IUI are minimal. There is a small risk of infection, but this is rare. There is also a small risk of multiple pregnancy, which occurs in about 5% of IUI cycles.

The most common side effect of IUI is mild cramping or bloating. These side effects are usually temporary and go away within a few days.

The risk of multiple pregnancies with IUI is lower than with IVF. However, there is still a small risk that you could become pregnant with twins or triplets. Women who are at high risk of multiple pregnancies may be prescribed a medication to reduce this risk.

It usually takes about 2-4 weeks after IUI to see if a pregnancy has occurred.

In some cases of IUI, medication may be used to stimulate ovulation. Clomiphene citrate, letrozole, and injectable gonadotropins are common medications used to increase the number of eggs available for fertilisation. Your fertility doctor will advise if this is necessary and prescribe your medication as needed.
